The ladies from All Girl Summer Fun Band sure are a busy bunch. The quartet (which formed in 1998) are in a slew of bands. Kim Baxter (vocals, keyboards, guitar) has played with The Young Astronauts, Cherry Ice Cream Smile, and One Two. Jen Sbragia (guitar, vocals) has worked with Pretty Face, Kissing Book, and The Softies. Kathy Foster (drums, vocals) has played with Haelah, Hutch and Kathy, her one-woman band Butterfly Transformation Service, and probably the best know of all, The Thermals. Rounding out the band is Ari Douangpanya (bass, vocals).
All Girl Summer Fun Band lives up to their name, with songs like “Video Game Heart,” and “Dear Mr. & Mrs. Troublemaker” injecting the Joan Jett look-alikes in the crowd with a dose of sunny energy that got them dancing. I caught up with them after their PDX Pop Now set to chat.
How’d you guys form? Kathy: We started in ’98. We all met thru Kim, she knew each of us individually. She thought it would be a good idea for us to get together and play music. At first it was going to be just for the summer, but then we kept playing.
I heard you’re not touring this summer because you’re recording a new album. Kim: We’re working on it. We’re trying to find out a new way to write this album, get a new approach.
How will it be different from your previous records? Kim: I don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see. I guess just spending more time on the songs, and collaborating more. We’d like getting together and coming up with it, so maybe a more mature sound.
Kathy: We kind of have a concept for it. We took some photos with Kim’s brother in Chicago. He’s using photos of natural backgrounds and putting us in them. We have a friend of Kim’s who’s a writer, who we want to kind of write a story. We have some ideas for the design of it, but not really any songs or titles for it.
Kim: I’ve got a couple of songs started that I’m working out for it.
So how have you been going about the song writing process? Kim: It has been one person writes one whole song, and brings it to the band.
Kathy: We don’t play that much. We’re all busy with our other bands.
