Head Automatica
After a 13 year run with one of the most successful Long Island bands, Glassjaw’s lead singer Daryl Palumbo set out to create something a little more rare. With the mix of luck, a party, and some really creative talents sprung a REAL pop band: Head Automatica. You may have heard their hit “Beating Heart Baby” on the Billboard Charts, or caught them on MTV with their newest single “Graduation Day”. After hitting up a local show, I had a chance to sit down with a few of the musicians from HA and discuss skateboards (check out the autographed deck you can win!), musical phases, and some crazy things that happened while on tour.

What influenced the transition from a band like Glassjaw to Head Automatica?
Daryl Palumbo: I don’t know, I guess its just two different sides of me. I like to play more than one type of music, and its just two different kinds I like.

Are you still working with Glassjaw?
Daryl: Sure, yeah.

I saw you guys had some gnarly skateboards up on your site. Is that something you like to do as a past-time?
Daryl: Yeah, when we have some sick skateboards.

Jarvis: We got them in the trailer.

Daryl: Yeah they’re in the back.

Jarvis: We were in LA for work a while ago, so I had my friend from Connecticut send us a bunch of decks so we can stop while we’re driving and get out and skate.

Your new album is highly anticipated. Last I heard, you were deciding between two names for the album: Automatica, and We Love You & Popaganda.
Daryl: Yeah, we chose Popaganda

In your own time, what kinda of music do you listen to?
Daryl: All kinds especially pop music. Ones with good song-writing.

Jarvis: Anthrax!

(Daryl and Craig Bonich laugh)

Jarvis: We’re into a sick metal phase right now.

Oh yeah? I just got myself into one of those as well.
Jarvis: What metal bands do you like? Any of the Norwegian bands?

It ranges, I actually like a lot of the Finnish bands like The 69 Eyes, and Children of Bodom.
Daryl: Children of Bodom are sick!

Jarvis: The bands Kings of Leon, are they related to Leon Russell? They look like Leon Russell.

Daryl: What are you talking about?

Jarvis: The guys with the piercings and shit, they look like Leon Russell!

Craig: … Alright.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with it right now?
Daryl: Hmm, if I won the lottery? I’d give my parents a lot of money.

Have any plans for Valentines Day?
Daryl: No I don’t have any plans for Valentines Day. I will hopefully be home.

What’s your favorite thing about your band?
Daryl: Playing live all together.

Favorite food?
Daryl: I’m thinking sushi and HOTDOGS!

(everyone laughs)

Is there a story behind that?
Daryl: No, it’s just the shit, I love that.

Favorite alcoholic beverage?
Daryl: Um... Gin and tonic.

Jarvis: Holla!

Daryl: Jarvis, that’s yours?

Jarvis: I’m holding it!

Daryl: Nice.

Favorite place you’ve ever played at?
Daryl: Brixton Academy in London. It was a really good experience. Second show I ever played at and it was with the Deftones.

Favorite tours?
Daryl: There’s been so many. Glassjaw, American Nightmare, Blood Brothers, I Am The Avalanche, Fury, Head Automatica/ Curiosa tour. That was the shit! Just all good people.

Anything funny happened lately on this tour?
Daryl: I can think of something but I don’t want to embarrass Craig Bonich.

Craig: What, about me?

Daryl: Yeah. Craig drank Jarvis’s piss.

(everyone laughs)

Wait, what?! Why?
Daryl: It was in a bottle. There was nowhere to go and we couldn’t stop so Jarvis used a bottle. Then when we stopped at the apartment, it was really dark and Craig grabbed it because he thought it was his water. It was kinda funny!
