The incredibly exuberant Lisa Lashes, sometimes known as the Queen of Hard House, is at the crest of the hard house wave, which continues to sweep club land UK. Known for her outrageous outfits almost as much as her sensational sets, Lisa is also now expanding her international profile, largely due to her new residency at Gods Kitchen in the UK and US.
Lisa is the first and only female to be considered among the top ten DJs in the world by DJ Magazine, ranking ninth in 2000 and continuing as the top-ranking female DJ in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Amongst her heavy schedule she found the time to answer a couple questions.
How did you get started spinning?
Clubbing was what made me want to DJ. So I borrowed decks off one of my mates whose mum wouldn’t let him play loud music in the house. Then I started buying records from charity shops and borrowing tunes from record libraries. My first proper gig was for Sundissentials, a boat party, where I got my first residency.
What are some of the differences in American and European crowds at clubs?
I’ve had an amazing time playing at clubs like Avalon in New York; I had a great response from the clubbers. But I guess my real hard core fans are at home in the UK.
What are some of the more random tracks you have tossed in your mix?
I like to play all sorts of bootlegs of well-known and recognizable tracks. I have a particular favorite at the moment that has Michael Jackson’s Thriller in it.
I read that during your free time you like to play chess. Why do you like it? And tips for a beginner?
I’ve always played, since I was a child. I think its great fun. The crazy thing is that the game can go on for days.
What was your best club set?
It was in South Africa when I played in front of 33,000 people in a stadium…it was absolutely amazing!
What is the strangest thing a fan has ever asked you?
To marry them!
Do you have any secret TV show addictions?
I like to watch Big Brother and Eastenders but I wouldn’t say I’m addicted to them.
What is one interesting fact people might not know about you?
I used to be a Jehovah’s Witness.
What three CD\'s are in your CD player?
My new summer breaks mix, the new track by the Bass Spankers and anything by Barbara Streisand.
What are your top 4 movie?
Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Grease and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
